The Leelanau Peninsula is the second oldest American Viticultural Area in the state of Michigan. The area is now home to 25 wineries with 680 acres of wine grapes–a quarter of the state’s total. The cool climate produces wines that are often crisp, clean and balanced, as well as ice wine. The trail is divided into three mini-trails for easy touring: the Sleeping Bear Loop, the Northern Peninsula Loop and the Grand Traverse Bay Loop. Wineries are located within diverse microclimates uniquely suited for a variety of wine grapes. Among the internationally acclaimed varietals are Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The local wines continue to achieve national and international accolades with each passing vintage.
