The 3 Sisters: Indigenous Agriculture

September 11 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

William Derouin & Tera John of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will discuss Indigenous agricultural practices. Tera is an active Tribe member who practices native food traditions and works at the Tribe’s “Gitigaan” or garden. She’ll discuss the importance of the Three Sisters – corn, beans & squash – and how they relate to Native beliefs, women and family relationships. William will speak about the current Agriculture & Food Sovereignty work at the tribal headquarters at Peshawbestown. He’ll also announce the GT Band’s recent industrial production of a garden soil amendment from fish waste called “Gigook Gitigaan “ or fish garden. Presented in partnership with the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society.
