The Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society will relate the history of the iconic Poor Farm, located just west of Maple City. The farm was established by Leelanau County in 1908, as a means of providing housing and meaningful employment to impoverished area residents. After the farm ceased operations, the property fell into disrepair, with only the barn remaining in place. LCHPS members Laurel Jeris, Barbara Siepker and Steve Stier will describe the successful efforts to preserve and rehabilitate this historic structure, and promote greater understanding of the farm’s history. NOTE: Attendance will be limited to 25, so please contact the library in advance to register: 326-5361, or [email protected]
