Historic Property Owners Opportunity to Apply for Michigan Historic Marker Designation: When visitors, community members and groups visit a historic place they can connect to their heritage which provides a sense of belonging and being a part of a culturally rich network. A meeting is being held to reach out, connect, encourage and support interested private owners and groups to work on getting their significant historic sites recognized and appreciated for their stories and contributions to local history in the five-county Traverse City area.
A presentation on the eligibility and process of applying for a Michigan Historic Marker is being offered by Heather Lehman, Graduate Assistant at the Michigan History Center, who is responsible for the administration of these beautiful metal markers. This free public meeting is provided for private and public owners of Michigan historic structures, sites and places who are interested in finding out how to apply for and achieve a historic designation. Meeting will be held Friday, November 1 st at 1 pm, at Traverse City Area Public Library, McGuire Room, 610 Woodmere Ave., Traverse City.
This program is being co-sponsored by the Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society, Leelanau Historical Society and Benzie Area Historical Society to inform and assist. Structures, places and sites that are eligible for a Michigan Historic Marker receive this metal historical marker describing its history and contribution to the local area and to Michigan as a whole. The process can seem daunting, but information and support makes it less so. Join us to find out the process.
