Charles Murphy: New Paintings

Center Gallery opens its 2015 May 22 with new works of Up North icons by Traverse City painter Charles Murphy. A public reception for the artist is 6 p.m. at the gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

Murphy’s new body of work reflects his affinity for classic, northern Michigan symbols – boats, barns, birds and the diverse landscape. He looks for subjects that have a strong “local” presence, and records them as sketches, which are later finished in the studio. Murphy’s evocative, emotive impressions of his homeplace are executed in a richly saturated palette using watercolor, oil and acrylic.
