4th of July Flag Raising Ceremony

July 4 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

Join community members of all ages in celebrating the founding of our nation in a joyous and patriotic ceremony. The traditional raising of the flag will be followed by a singalong of well-loved and familiar patriotic songs.

Eric Carlson, the featured speaker, is best known in Leelanau County for his 25-year career as a reporter and columnist for the Leelanau Enterprise newspaper. He will share his views on the importance of a free press to our nation, especially in times of war and domestic conflict. Before he began working at the Leelanau Enterprise in 1998, he served for 25 years in the United States Marine Corps as a combat correspondent and a public affairs officer. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Somali Civil War.

The Flag Raising Ceremony begins at 10 am, July 4th, at the Old Settlers Picnic Grounds, located on the southeastern shore of Glen Lake near the corner of Dunn’s Farm Rd. (CR 675) and Burdickville Rd (CR 616). Please bring your own lawn chairs. The event is sponsored by Glen Lake Woman’s Club. After the program the chapel at Old Settlers Park will be open for tours.

The Glen Lake Woman’s Club was established in 1937 with a mission to foster social, civic and educational projects. The Club sponsors the Glen Arbor Art Fair to raise funds for Glen Lake Schools student scholarships. Other Club projects include the improvement and beautification of the Chapel and grounds at Old Settlers Park, organization of this community Flag Raising Ceremony, and a Christmas party for residents of the Maple Lake Valley Nursing Home.
