The newest segment of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT) from Fisher Road to Port Oneida Road opened on Friday May 22, 2015.
This segment adds about 3.5 miles to the 9.5 miles of previously completed trail. This portion of the trail includes 600 feet of boardwalk over wetlands along the west side of Westman Road and connects users to the Port Oneida Rural Historic District.
Port Oneida is perhaps the most complete early 20th century agricultural landscape, unique for the number of intact farmsteads which reveal a small closely-knit farming community founded in the early 1860’s and the evolution of agriculture from subsistence farming to cash crop, common throughout the United States. The 1.3 mile section of the trail within the Historic District has an aggregate surface. Much of the route follows a portion of the Bay View trail and winds through scenic forests, over beautiful rolling terrain, with short, but moderately challenging hills.
